Hydrovolt and the Icelandic Recycling Fund to collaborate on end-of-life battery recycling solutions in Iceland

Hydrovolt enters collaboration agreement with the Icelandic Recycling Fund on end-of-life battery recycling solutions in Iceland. The agreement is part of Hydrovolt’s Nordic business strategy, ensuring no battery is ever wasted in the Nordic region.
The Icelandic Recycling Fund (IRF) executes the extended producer’s responsibility on certain goods, including EV batteries, in Iceland. It administers and distributes recycling fees, in accordance with The Act on Recycling Fees.
“As battery volumes continue to grow, it is important that appropriate recycling solutions are in place. Through this collaboration with Hydrovolt, we are supporting the development of an efficient and responsible system for managing end-of-life batteries and recovering valuable raw materials,” says Íris Gunnarsdóttir, Business Manager at the Icelandic Recycling Fund.
The total car park in Iceland consists of 17 percent electric and plug-in hybrids and has had a steady increase the last few years as the country is close to 80 percent electric of new cars sold. This requires Iceland to have solutions for handling battery waste in a sustainable and safe manner.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with IRF to offer safe and efficient handling of end-of-life volumes in Iceland. Through our logistics network and recycling process, we will ensure the recovery of critical raw materials from the batteries at high recovery rates,” says Hans Bjerkaas, Chief Commercial and Development Officer.
Hydrovolt offers a complete service offering for battery importers through reuse assessments and recycling of used batteries from electric vehicles and industrial applications. The company operates the Nordic region’s largest battery recycling facility in Norway with high safety standards and a total recycling rate close to 100 percent. The facility has a design capacity of 12,000 tonnes battery packs, in which equals 25.000-30.000 cars annually.
The collaboration agreement provides a basis for Hydrovolt to offer collection, transport and material recycling of batteries from electric vehicles and industrial applications in Iceland to its facility in Norway. Hydrovolt is already an approved treatment operator in Norway, Sweden and Denmark supporting producers and importers fulfilling their extended producer responsibility.
