Hydrovolt and Bertel O. Steen enter into partnership on reuse and recycling services

Hydrovolt has entered into a partnership with one of Norway’s largest car importers and dealers, Bertel O. Steen, to provide recycling and reuse services for electric vehicle (EV) batteries in the Norwegian market. The collaboration addresses the growing volume of battery waste as the vehicle fleet becomes increasingly electrified.
During the agreement period, discarded EV batteries from Bertel O. Steen’s car brands will be collected by Hydrovolt at various collection points across the country. The batteries will be assessed and processed at Hydrovolt’s recycling facility in Fredrikstad.
“99 percent of our passenger car sales at Bertel O. Steen so far this year have been electric. As the electrification of the vehicle fleet continues to grow, it is important to have a robust and sustainable system for recycling and reuse of electric vehicle batteries. The collaboration with Hydrovolt ensures this in an efficient and good manner,” says Harald Frigstad, CEO of Bertel O. Steen.
Bertel O. Steen is a Norwegian automotive group established in 1901 and is today one of Norway’s largest importers and dealers of cars. The group is involved in import, sales, and service, and has a nationwide network of dealerships and workshops, including Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Fiat, Jeep, and others.
“We are proud to collaborate with the Bertel O. Steen group and look forward to delivering a strong and comprehensive service offering within recycling and reuse assessments for their electric fleet, ensuring responsible handling of their high-energy batteries,” says Hans Bjerkaas, Chief Commercial and Development Officer at Hydrovolt.
Through Hydrovolt’s services, more efficient resource utilization, reduced waste, and increased material recovery will be achieved—key principles of the circular economy. Through its recycling solutions, a total recycling rate of 99 percent is achieved at Hydrovolt’s plant.
The partnership agreement has been entered into as part of Bertel O. Steen’s membership in the producer responsibility organization, Autoretur Battery Recycling, a company owned by the Norwegian Car Importer’s Association BIL. It is a long-term agreement that meets new producer responsibility requirements and accounts for future growth in discarded electric vehicles.
